Economit client, DHP promote over 1200 shows a year across the UK alongside owning six live music and club venues in Nottingham and in Bristol and operating The Jericho, Oxford and Manchester Cathedral.

We are delighted to have been named National Promoter of the Year at the Live Music Business Awards.

On receiving the award DHP MD George Akins said, "Wow. How special this is. We've worked really hard to establish ourselves as a national promoter and to do it the DHP way. There was really stiff competition from major players in this category. For an independent to come out on top, judged by our peers, is just fantastic. It's real credit to the whole DHP team."

DHP were also shortlisted for Best Venue - Major Club (Rock City), Best Venue - Club (Thekla), Best Festival 15,000 to 40,000 (Splendour Festival) and Breakthrough Artiste (Dog Is Dead).

The Live Music Business awards is the only event committed to presenting awards to the business people who drive the country�s contemporary live music industry, recognising excellence and talent among promoters, venue operators, festival organisers and agents amongst others. The awards were created three years ago by the publisher of LIVE UK , the only magazine dedicated to the companies and individuals working in this sector of the creative industries. The 2012 Awards were announced on the evening of 10th October.

Paul Boswell (Free Trade Agency) winner of the Agent of the Year category at this years award ceremony commented on DHP receiving the National Promoter of the year Award, saying "I'm not sure I'm happy about everyone discovering my secret!!"

In addition to operating venues and promoting national tours and shows DHP organises festivals including Dot To Dot in Nottingham, Bristol and Manchester, Hit The Deck nominated for 'Best Festival' at the 2012 Kerrang Awards, Gathering in Oxford and Splendour Festival with Nottingham City Council.

DHP also manage Dog is Dead whose first album was released by Atlantic on Monday.

Economit have been providing their outsourced IT Director service since 2011 and this is a great article on the benefits of using one.

Hiring the right CTO is integral to the success of a business that is expanding globally. Whether it�s a full-time, part-time or an acting-CTO, the wrong person in key company positions can cost a business thousands or tens of thousands of investment as well as man hours. This is especially true when it comes to hiring the CTO.

CTOs are notoriously difficult to hire, requiring a mix of talents; technical, business, interpersonal [able to communicate the technical drivers to the board], project management and leadership � and visionary too. Today, CTOs are multi-tasking individuals that aren�t just coders locked in some basement � they play a vital role in a company�s strategic plan and growth.

The hiring process, the time and budget, for such a high-ranking individual that manages staff, oversees budgets and reports to the board, can be a lengthy process and needs to be part of a longer-term corporate strategy.

However, a new and novel way of hiring the right tech-executive is being proposed by PTS Consulting, the global ICT professional services, managed services and resourcing solutions firm. The Virtual CTO service or a �CTO on-tap� promises to deliver a CTO at the fraction of the cost of a permanent hire and provides you with a senior executive with the combined intelligence of hundreds. Firms have now been trialling the idea.

A virtual CTO might typically be asked to provide an independent view of an organsiation�s existing IT infrastructure and the operational processes before aligning it with the current business requirements. At the same time, the Virtual CTO will be expected to identify potential areas for optimisation, risks and investment and provide a proactive approach to implementing new processes and infrastructure, while still being sympathetic to any risks or costs.

With information technology generally falling under the responsibility of the COO, who normally has a limited amount of time, a risk-based approach to IT is taken � meaning everything is reactive and dealt with when things fail. Not the best way to run IT.

A good CTO is one understands the ambitions of that business, factoring in drivers and issues before translating this into a high level structured IT strategy and a budget that is going to be responsive to change.

And so far, according to users of the service it�s been a useful mechanism for providing a close relationship with a qualified CTO, who provides typically one hour per month (more if needed) to examine a business� IT needs and develop a more proactive relationship.

Admittedly, some CTOs are better suited to an organisation than others but it all depends on what you need. Placing a CTO that is a good cultural fit into an organisation is still arguably one of the most understated and more difficult things to do. You want to ensure a new senior hire fits straight into the office and business culture.

Introducing the complete opposite might be disastrous and almost certainly going to be met with resistance. The idea of a virtual-person becomes more appealing. In theory, you could switch a CTO if your requirements changed or if you didn�t like the one you were working with � it�s just more flexible.

The virtual CTO function works well, especially in a world where there are many IT service providers � all offering very similar services. What happens is that the COO is under constant pressure, so the virtual CTO takes on the responsibility of choosing the right IT solutions for a business � as long as they understand the business and have knowledge of what competitors are up to.

Firms are being driven towards the idea of a virtual CTO as utility-based model with the option to buy additional resources on a project by project basis has become very appealing.

Ultimately, the mark of a great CTO is one that lets you get on with your core business, while it handles the direction of IT � that�s what the virtual CTO is for. Some people don�t need a CTO all time � just some of the time

Chief information officers (CIOs) should consider adopting industrialized, low-cost IT services (ILCS) to reduce the cost of running the business, while controlling the risk, integration and customisation issues, to increase the business value of IT and enhance its perception by the business, according to Gartner, Inc. CIOs said that delivering differentiation and additional business value, while reducing the cost of IT will be their business and IT priorities in 2011, according to the Gartner Executive Program (EXP) 2011 CIO agenda survey*.

�While there are multiple ways to reduce the cost of IT delivery, as well as to increase the value of IT, the trend towards ILCS will become paramount for end users to trade nonessential customisation for better and less expensive services,� said Claudio Da Rold, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. Gartner predicts that despite being an embryonic market, by 2015 industrialised services will represent more than 30 percent of the IT services market and cloud services are expected to become a $177 billion market by 2015, of which $77 billion is based on advertising business models.

The UK server market is forecast to shrink next year as the corporate refresh nears it end of cycle and more SMEs turn to cloud computing instead of buying hardware.

This is the view of the landscape in 2012 according to the number-crunchers at IDC, which downgraded previous estimates of a 2.1 per cent revenue decline for the year to a steeper drop of 6.1 per cent.

The weak growth forecasts for the Western world from the International Monetary Fund combined with dynamics in the x86 space make for some "pretty depressing market conditions", said Nathaniel Martinez, director at IDC.

"SMBs are moving a lot faster to the cloud than we expected as they don't have access to capital to invest in IT infrastructures so some of the server spend is being displaced."

The replacement cycle occurring in the enterprise market, especially among financial institutions that opened up their wallets at the end of 2009 following the recession, "is pretty much coming to an end", the analyst added.

Martinez said that mid-sized and large corporate organisations are seeing a good ROI on virtualisation and many who had invested in high-spec systems were adding virtual servers instead of buying physical machines.

These factors are bound to have an impact on server hardware revenues," he said.

The European economy could be boosted by billions of euros over the next decade if businesses increase investment in information and communication technology (ICT), according to research.

A six-month study by AT&T and research company Oxford Economics found European countries have fallen behind US levels of IT investment and productivity growth. The report says a greater investment in technology could help European gross domestic product (GDP) grow by �760bn by 2020.

"This would be worth around �1,500 per person at today's prices. ICT-driven innovation would contribute approximately one third of that growth - around �220bn," continued the report.

Andrew Edison, regional vice president for AT&T Europe, said businesses can aid growth by increasing investment in ICT.

"Productivity is the cornerstone of economic growth. There is clear evidence that investing in technology can make European companies more productive and competitive, which is critical to growth in these tough financial times," he said.

He added that investment in IT hardware needs to be supplemented with investment in IT skills.

"The investment needed in technology isn't all about buying new kit. Investment needs to be made in people, skills and processes to get the full return on investment (ROI)," he said.

Edison believes that without matching US levels of ICT investment by 2020, emerging economies like Brazil could "overtake the Eurozone" in terms of productivity.

Fabio Colasanti, senior adviser at the European Policy Centre, believes European governments have a responsibility to put ICT policies at the heart of economic agendas.

"National governments must prioritise ICT investment more effectively and focus on creating the right conditions for investment. This means improvements to ICT infrastructure, more flexible labour markets and better ICT education," he said.
